Innovation and industry: Celebrating the quintessentially British Aston Martin

Not many things can claim to be as quintessentially British as James Bond … but Aston Martin can. Ever since Sean Connery hopped into the front seat of the Aston Martin DB5 in 1964's Goldfinger, the two have been inextricably linked; like Morecambe and Wise, gin and tonic or Shearer and Sheringham. The DB5 toy, as a result of the film, was the biggest selling toy of that year.

Aston Martin, as a company, is steeped in history. First established in 1913, production was somewhat halted by the outbreak of the First World War but in the post-war years, the Aston Martin became the symbol of the lavish and hedonistic 1920s; the very emblem of both quality and luxury.

Aston Martins were the car of choice for Europe's aristocracy – seen everywhere from Monte Carlo to Kensington. However, Aston Martin has never been one to stand still. Just like the famous Q of the Bond movies, technology has always been right at the forefront of the agenda for Aston Martin designers; who have always failed to recognise the distinction between engineering and art.

Adopting a more 'sporty' look over time, today’s Aston Martin’s maintain the perfect balance of antiquity and modernity. Always looking forward but never losing sight of their origins. This has led to what has been described as a 'timeless' style, coupled with the latest technological innovations available to the industry.

Whilst the physical process is still integral to the design of any Aston Martin, the brand are launching themselves headfirst into the digital age; making use of the latest software developments to make their cars better than ever – even using the latest technology from 3D printers.

Whereas in the 'old days', sculpting by hand was the norm (which could mean that a one-off wheel design could take six months), nowadays, a designer merely has to draw one segment of the wheel, with a software programme able to mimic the rest of the wheel at ease. This will then be visualised and produced on a 3D printer.

If you appreciate a manufacturer who is constantly looking to innovate whilst retaining that link to the past, you need look no further than an HR Owen Aston Martin car for your next purchase. With competitive pricing, HR Owen offers a number of different Aston Martin models for you to own including the Vanquish, Vantage, Rapide and DB9. Why not get behind the wheel of one and discover what true Britishness feels like?

The Elegant Spira Magnetic iPhone Charger

The Elegant Spira Magnetic iPhone Charger
Interactive design student Alice Robbiani from Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL), a university in Switzerland, has worked her way around the disadvantages of induction charging with the elegant Spira – a magnetic charger which can charge an iPhone while turning it into an artwork. This stylish piece of device can charge your phone wirelessly as well as serve as a clock and an attractive visual piece in the room. Unfortunately, this visually pleasing magnetic iPhone charger is just a prototype. Robbiani created the concept as part of her graduation project, but we can still keep our hopes up that we will get to see this ingenious marriage of function and art in the near future.

Here's What You've Been Waiting For: The New 2015 Mazda MX-5!

New 2015 Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 is one of Mazda’s best-selling models. We all know and love the MX-5 because it’s a fun little sports car to own and drive. The car has been in production since 1989. If you are reading this blog post from the United States, you will know this model as the Miata.

It is currently in its third generation and has been since 2008, but all that is about to change soon. That’s because the Japanese car manufacturer unveiled the new fourth-generation MX-5! There has been much hype and excitement over the new model, and boy has it met people’s expectations! Keep reading to find out why you will fall in love with the new 2015 Mazda MX-5!

Mazda’s partnership with Fiat:

A few months ago, a rather intriguing piece of news emerged out of Japan. It said that Mazda had joined forces with Italian automaker Fiat for the new MX-5. Mazda have said that Fiat will be sharing the MX-5 architecture for a new Alfa Romeo model soon. Both models are to get built at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant in Japan.

But those of you with a dislike for the Italian cars need not worry. Mazda is using its engine and technology for the MX-5 while Fiat will use their stuff for the new Alfa roadster.

Engine choice

These days Mazda is keen to emphasise the benefits of its SKYACTIV technology. The term is a universal one that applies to fuel-efficient engines and lightweight bodies. Mazda’s SKYACTIV engines are high-compression petrol and diesel units. They are low-displacement but high power units, and are great for those that want to enjoy low engine emissions.

Diesel engines by their nature are high-compression units. But no-one has managed to create high-compression petrol engines. At least, not ones that overcome various engineering challenges until now. The Japanese carmaker hasn’t confirmed what engines will go into the new MX-5 at the moment. But it’s likely Mazda will opt for 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre SKYACTIV engines. Each engine will offer 130 and 165 brake horsepower respectively. In the current generation MX-5 cars, 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre non-SKYACTIV engines get used.

Chassis

SKYACTIV chassis technology will also get used in the new MX-5. Some of you will remember Mazda unveiled the lightweight chassis at the New York International Auto Show in April. The new SKYACTIV chassis shaves off around 100 kilograms from the current generation. Let’s not forget that a lighter chassis means that the acceleration will be quicker!

The chassis also allows for the engine to get fitted behind the front axle. That means the engine will be closer to the middle of the car than before!

Price and availability

According to Lifestyle Mazda, you can expect the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 to hit dealer showrooms in the first half of 2015. There are no firm prices from Mazda at the moment, but I estimate that the new model will cost around £20,000.
